A Taliban spokesman said earlier that the ruling militia had rushed reinforcements to the provincial capital in preparation for a bloody battle for Mazar-i-Sharif.

Most of the civilian population has left the Taliban-held northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, which is under attack from opposition forces, an opposition spokesman said.

The spokesman also said the Northern Alliance had declared an amnesty for people in Mazar-i-Sharif who had previously supported the militia.

Mohammad Ashraf Nadeem, a spokesman for Northern Alliance commander Atta Mohammad, said from the region that opposition forces had stepped up their advance on Mazar-i-Sharif.
