NEWSFLASH: Taliban abandons key city says opposition

Afghan opposition forces claim they have broken through Taliban defences around Mazar-e-Sharif and have entered the key city.

Opposition spokesman Ashraf Nadeem says the Taliban appeared to have abandoned the city.

"We are moving through one neighbourhood at a time," he said.

Northern Alliance forces broke through Taliban defences at the Pul-e-Imam Bukhri bridge on the southern edge of the city, Nadeem said.

He said the opposition also overran the civilian airport and have entered the city.

He claims Taliban troops appeared to be retreating east towards the Samangan province. If the city has been taken from the Taliban, it would be a major victory in the campaign against the Afghan ruling militia.

It will open up vital supply lines to the opposition from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Three factions of the northern alliance are moving on the city, where the population is largely made up of ethnic Uzbeks and Tajiks.

At the Pentagon, Rear Admiral Craig Quigley, a spokesman for Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, said they had no independent knowledge of the reported breakthrough but said it would be a welcome development if true.

Rashid Dostum, the Uzbek warlord who controlled Mazar-e-Sharif until the Taliban captured the city three years ago, told CNN-Turk television the alliance overran the city in a half hour. He said he was speaking by satellite telephone from a hill overlooking the town.
