The analogy b/t AMD and the Soviet space program is actually apt on several levels. It is true that quite often the Soviet technology was quite good (e.g. Proton rockets), but shortcuts were often taken and systematic protections primitive. The result was that when things went wrong, it was often catastrophic, taking many lives. Kinda like when the heatsink is bumped, causing an Athlon to burn up in an eyeblink <friendly g>.
