RE:<Ignoring Paul and all responses to him solves this problem. However it does still allow others to read his posts. That's what's too dangerous for this thread.>

Elmer,

You are absolutely right that ignoring Paul would solve the problem, It would solve the problem immediately for the individual poster and would even solve the problem for the whole thread if everyone ignored him. Even Paul with his almost clinical obsession with muckraking would become bored with posting if he felt no one was listening.

Two points were raised by others in regards to ignore.

1) In order to truly ignore Paul you need to ignore responses to him. This may be true but if you find value in the responses to Paul then by implication Paul's incitation of that response had value too. If Paul actually serves to inspire valuable responses to his posts that would otherwise not have been made then his post has a certain little bit of value itself. So if you simply can't bring yourself to use the ignore feature to block responses to Paul then you are implicitly conceding that Paul's incitations do add some perverted form of value.

2) Non-subscribers don't have the ignore feature... Well then why dont they freaking subscribe? Anyone who can't scrape together a couple hundred bucks for a lifetime membership to SI shouldn't be in the stock market. I categorically scoff at the notion that a non-subscriber has any fundamental right to complain about the free services that are provided to them by SI and this threads existence. If they have to wade through Paul's posts in order to save the subscription fee then tough luck!

So again, I agree that moderation is an imperfect solution, unfortunately it's really not an issue of moderation or thought control, it's an issue of maturity, and a lot of the people here just don't have any.
