An interesting theory. Imo not likely as the chief weapon of the Taliban has been "civilian casualties". Wiping out a whole city would validate all US claims about the Talibs and al Qaeda. More likely is that Talibs are finally realizing that to defend cities in trenches and caves is to die. Time to head for the hills and do guerilla warfare?

In Mazar-e-Sharif, the population is largely made up of ethnic Uzbeks and Tajiks. These are the same tribes of the Northern Alliance. I don't think the Taliban were popular. If the Taliban have any forward planning ability, some surprises would have been left behind though. From my earlier post.. The youngest and most fervent — up to 8,000 of them according to Taleban officials — have already been sent to the front lines north of Kabul and around Mazar-i-Sharif. The older men who have lived their lives by the gun in Pakistan’s lawless frontier provinces, sit waiting for their marching orders. Message 16632515 It's when the Allies start bringing in significant humanitarian aid, troops, supplies that "phase two" starts imho. The allies have lots of eyes up in the air though, watching what is going on, both real and robotic, plus more on the ground. They have a 24hr Air Force that can blast anything that moves. They also have night sights. Better night sights and more of 'em. At the moment I see it as "advantage" Northern Alliance, for the game set and match "Phase One" -g-
