Probably a little of both combined with low rates and low fuel costs. It sure seems like those last two things are holding a lot of weight in an economy that is still retracting IMO.

Do people become immune to bad news at some point?

I don't think that the public will react much to announcements of spores spreading to more post offices. Cross contamination is to be expected. Over time, one or two spores will probably land in just about every post office. After all, those critters live for a hundred years.

What will get a reaction is if there is a new input of anthrax into the postal system--another letter.

Absoultely.

It's the same process which affects our children when they are watching mindless violence on television or in the movie theaters. Or when they play violent video games. Repeat it enough times and people become desensitized to the stimulus. This, in no way, mitigates the severity of the act of terrorism or violence but people do become numb.

Examples.... Are people living in Los Angeles still shocked by another story of a high school drive-by shooting claiming the life of a young man or woman? Or how about a random shooting on the highway? Another undercover drug bust?
