True and Cisco uses the VOiP technlogy that we built extensively in our offices worldwide. This stuff works and
saves us a bundle.
I don't think if we migrate all the voice traffic onto
the IP network would result in the need for more bandwidth as voice packets don't take up that much bandwidth to begin
with.
One of the reasons VOIP hasn't taken off is because the phone companies are taking their own sweet time to deploy VOip. I think this is because they recognise that voice essentially is free on the IP network and they have no desire to lose one of their most profitable revenue streams.
The demise of the alternative carriers like Covad etc is the worst thing that could have happened to the consumer as now there is no competitive pressure on the RBOCs to deploy broadband access technologies like DSL in a
speedy manner.
