>> Wrong. Liberty comes first. If "country" came first, we'd still be part of the British Empire <<

without this country you would have no liberty. you can desire liberty all you want, but if you don't have the constructs within a society to preserve it you have nothing.

>> How you get from there to proposing all sorts of barriers to free trade is beyond comprehension <<

because simple minded liberals such as yourself think all we have to do is preach free trade and we will have free trade. of course it never works in the real world. yes, rdb in a perfect world we wouldn't need protective tariffs. in a perfect world we wouldn't need nuclear bombs either now would we? there is nothing wrong with free trade as long as it's fair trade. obviously in many instances it's not fair to america anymore so we need to threaten or actually use protective tariffs to make sure other countries play fair. also, we should be a self-sufficient nation, not relying on other nations to supply us with critical resources or sustenance.

>> It is not a choice between either bowing to the WTO or throwing up all sorts of tariffs and other barriers in the name of "America first, second and third". One can favor removing barriers to trade without advocating "bowing" to the WTO. <<

absolutely. just like with regular wars, no one really wins in a trade war. the whole idea is if you negotiate trade agreements from a position of strength, you won't have to use tariffs. just like if you build up sufficient military might, you don't actually have to use it.
