Hi FaultLine; I disagree with your analysis of MAD as it applies to this situation.

The people who are willing to die are the pawns of the power holders behind them. The leaders don't blow themselves up. If they did, they could make quite the impression, in high level negotiations, for instance.

The fact is that our power is so strong that what is really at risk for them is a conventional version of MAD, while what we risk is only MAI (Mutually Assured Inconvenience). Remember what you said about the low level of risk associated with anthrax? That's inconvenience, not destruction.

I accept your argument, but disagree on one issue. The MAD was adoption of a suicidal doctrine by both sides; therefore I see a parallel.
