AMD , Taiwan's UMC plan chip plant-newspaper
TAIPEI, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc of the United States was considering building a second 12-inch wafer fabrication plant with Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) , a local newspaper said on Saturday.

The Chinese-language Economic Daily News said AMD, Intel's (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) chief competitor in the market for microprocessors, gave no details, such as the location of the plant.

But it said AMD plans to outsource production of its high-end processor Athlon and Athlon XP to UMC, the world's second largest contract chipmaker, and plans to book capacity of a fab from UMC.

UMC officials were not available for comment on Saturday.

AMD, based in Sunnycale, California, said at a financial meeting for analysts on Thursday that it would -- for the first time -- outsource processor production to a custom chip-making company.

But it did not disclose the name of the plant, or foundry.

On Friday, shares of UMC fell T$0.30 or 0.86 percent to close at T$34.70, while the wider TAIEX (^TWII - news) slipped 0.27 percent.
