Hi MadDog,

I hope all is well for both you and your family.

Frankly, I am disappointed with the Bush administration's decision to settle this matter. Politically, I can understand why he has chosen to do so. With this new war on terrorism and the US economy mired in a recession, this outcome to settle does not come as a surprise to anyone.

Do I believe Microsoft's reign of terror has ended with the restrictions imposed upon by this settlement? Of course not. Microsoft's ability to bundle their products with their operating system remains intact and continues to impose an unfair competitive advantage over their rivals. And history has shown over and over again that when competition is stifled, innovation and quality are sacrificed.

There is also no practical means possible for the government to police what Gates or Ballmer will do in the future. Rather than splitting the company into pieces and letting the free market (i.e. consumers) dictate the viability of the company and their products, this decision merely adds another layer of bureaucracy without resolution of the core problem: Microsoft still remains a monopoly power.

As you know, I have always been an advocate of the free market. But my opinion has always been set with the assumption that all companies compete with an equal footing. This is still clearly not the case with Microsoft.

Just my humble opinion, as usual....
