re: "The fact that P4 in certain speed grades is sold out leads to three possible conclusions:"

All your conclusions seem to imply Intel's production shortfalls. Could it not also be that demand is higher than anticipated? In this article:

ebnews.com

Channel sales boom as Intel focuses on smaller users

I find that:

"In a call with financial analysts, Intel last week reported that its sales through distribution grew 46% in
the third quarter, compared with the year-ago period. Sales through the channel accounted for 24% of
Pentium 4 shipments and will account for 40% in the fourth quarter, the company said."

On the other hand, maybe big business is just ignoring the P4 (too big, too noisy, etc):

""We're seeing a market-share shift from the large PC OEMs to the white-box manufacturers worldwide,”
said Eric Rothdeutsch, an analyst at Robertson Stephens Inc. in San Francisco. "

There are so many divergent points that I don't know what to think of Intel's sales this quarter.
