re:A lack of a one-to-one correspondence hardly obfuscates a link,.....

Your rage is limiting your rationality... I personally never said there was not a link between FGM and religion. What you read was a copy of a report from AI. I personally believe there IS a link but I accept the statement that not all people of a particular religion participate in the same practises. We see plenty of evidence for that in this country, what with snake worshippers, faith healers, excorcism, denial of medical treatment, etc.....and all are linked to some groups claiming to be Christian. As it said in the report some Islamic converts to Christianity still practise FGM. On the other hand, not all Islamics believe what Islamic believer bin Laden believes. All religious extremists are dangerous, in my view.

And call it PC if you want, but there are "vibrant" cultures in the ME and Africa. Doesn't mean that everything in those cultures is acceptable to me but that is true in the good ole USA also.. What makes this nation so special is our eclectic mix of cultures.

Katha Pollit.....frankly I know nothing about her. But I would like to see the context in which she used the word "heroes". If she was refering to the fireman and police and other rescuers she is clearly wrong.

So as Bugs Bunny says....unlax!!

Estimable, do you read Andrew Sullivan?

If you check out his site and read the relevant "archive", he shares your observation @Ms. Pollitt:

SONTAG AWARD NOMINEE: "9/11 and its sequelae [sic] have definitely rehabilitated such traditional masculine values as physical courage, upper-body strength, toughness, resolve. The WTC attack is men vs. men--firefighters v. fanatics. (It would seem positively ungrateful to ask why, in a city half black and brown, the "heroes" were still mostly white, and, for that matter, still mostly male.)" - Katha Pollitt, The Nation. Note that she cannot use the word heroes without placing it in quotation marks.

While I'm sure you know, but others may not, Sullivan was editor of the New Republic and writes columns for the NYTimes mag and the Sunday Times of London.
