Defence Secretary aims for broad post-Taliban government

The British Defence Secretary hopes the Northern Alliance will make progress towards Kabul.

But Geoff Hoon has stopped short of suggesting they should take the Afghan capital.

He hopes a broad-based government will succeed the Taliban.

The opposition say they are gathering north of Kabul with a view to entering the city.

But George W Bush said yesterday that opposition troops should steer clear of Kabul, reflecting a US effort to ensure that power is eventually shared among the various ethnic groups of the country.

Mr Hoon said: "We want them (the Alliance) to march towards Kabul, to take ground, to deny the Taliban regime and Osama bin Laden space in Afghanistan."

Mr Hoon sought to play down claims that the alliance were just as brutal as the Taliban.

He said: "There have been some stories told about their behaviour in the past, which actually I have had checked out, and are not nearly as bad as people have been suggesting."

He compared the Taliban to Hitler's Nazis.

He said a post Taliban regime in Afghanistan should reflect the range of ethnic groupings there.
