Rich,

On the flip side my wife and I went to two local outlets yesterday. Now, these are huge and draw from N.Y and N.J. and they were so crowded that after driving around for 1/2 hour and not finding a parking space we went home. The major highway in our tourist destination of Lancaster County was at a standstill so we had to take back roads to get home. I have never seen so many shoppers as there were this Saturday. Motels and restaurants along the main highway were packed so this looked very encouraging for retail in my area.

Rich1: Sharp falloff in airline travel and attendance at Disney World in Orlando is (IMHO) not due to "fear of flying" due to terrorist concerns. It is due to the mess at airports as they attempt to tighten security and increase searches of baggage and carry-on luggage.

Although this is a necessary evil, it is so haphazard and inefficient that one must get to the airport 2-3 hours in advance of a flight to have a ghost of a chance of being cleared to board on time. God forbid you have a connection to make -- you may as well kiss that goodbye if your connection is less than 90 minutes after time you land.

The incredible stress and nuisance (not to mention the inordinate amount of wasted time) is what is responsible for marked decline to airline numbers and tourism. Until the heightened security procedures become more efficient (and don't look for this to happen for several years), the tourism industry reliant upon the airlines will be decimated.
