real chip company men have fabs", ... virtual gorilla

actually there could be something to this. when real men needed fabs, the foundries qualified their processes with drams and they were not well suited to digital cmos design. these days most foundries try out the largest fpgas with their newest processes so they are a lot more tuned for digital design and speed. the largest and fastest fpgas are incredible these days and using the same process for a cpu in a full-custom design might give you good results with modest to good bin-splits. you may not get the fastest chips from a foundry but what percentage of your sale is the fastest anyway ?
