Tony,

Perhaps one of the reasons that the "fabless" model works in certain areas, like Xlinix, Altera, etc, is because none of them have fabs.

Therefore, those companies pay simliar prices to fab their chips.

The difference is that all the main FPGA/Programmable logic vendors are FABLESS - they compete on a more or less equal footing.

The AMD situation is different.

If they plan to compete with foundries - against Intel with its own fabs - they are DEAD MEAT.

Intel's VAST manufacturing plant and capacity - along with the world's BEST TECHNOLOGY - will have Sanders yelling "DUD" all the way to the FTC and DOJ and EU to seek legal protection from his own blunders.
