Roman is not synonymous with Italian as it applies to those times. Italy (the country not the land) did not exist at the time. Of course the modern Italian state didn't exist then but Roman Latin developed into modern Italian (and other languages), didn't it? The modern Italians are descendents of the people who lived there in Roman times. And during the Roman Empire, Roman citizenship was extended to all the inhabitants of Italy - though I forget exactly when this happened. So modern Italians are descendents of ancient Roman citizens, speak a language Latin evolved into in its own homeland. Clearly there's nothing inaccurate about seeing a relationship between ancient Romans and modern Italians - though governments and religion may have changed. If you are part Italian, you would have Roman ancestors.
