Probly makes economic sense in the short term. They do it with currencies to keep them at "preferred levels". Problems include what if they don't have the buying/selling power to achieve objectives and more importantly, it would make some people disenchanted with a rigged market. Having said that, I believe the govt is rigging the market to excess currently in the upward direction. I don't know if we will ever find out whether my suspicions are well founded. Do such clandestine operations become public by law after a certain amount of time has passed?
