combjelly: Even though UMC has a tweaked MPU process, it isn't going to be extremely fast. But with a core voltage of 1.2 volts, and the possibility of going lower, it might not need it. AMD just might be using UMC for the low voltage/low power processors. I personally consider that to be a little short-sighted, AMD needs to develop that capability themselves. But, on the otherhand, they may as well put their efforts into SOI for that capability instead of bulk silicon.

Outsourcing is, IMHO, a clear indication that AMD is going full-steam-ahead with their previous plans to convert Fab25 to 100% flash by the end of next year (i.e. no upgrade to 130nm - at least for CPUs).

With only Dresden Fab30 churning out processors, AMD cannot do more than roughly maintain market share - if even that. There doesn't seem to be a serious alternative to going with a foundry.
