Yeah I know what you mean. I owned a 1980 Mercedes 300SD diesel. The thing weighed over 5,000 pounds and got 25 ++ mpg. I now own a PT Cruiser which is 1/2 the weight of the Mercedes and it gets a crummy 20 mpg. That is the single biggest problem with the US automakers, they never built a decent car which could get 30-40 mpg. So the mileage I'm getting is roughly the same as I got with my first car 30 yrs ago, a 1966 Mustang with a V8 engine. The US got a taste of oil problems with the first Arab embargo in 1973 and basically did nothing to deliver better mileage in all of those years which would have ended our dependence on the Middle East. Now we're paying the price.
