Actually, this is kinda how I'm figuring it also... There seems to be a real upwelling of support for democratic reforms in Iran at this moment.

And the Iranians are probably one of the more modern middle eastern societies, despite their hard line clerics who still hold sectors of power.

I'm sure we do. Meddling is in our blood.

Meddling has nothing to do with it.. Every society has various elements that jockey for power and control over the future course of a nation. NO PARTICULAR ONE of these elements have any sacred right to make that decision independent of the will of the people, no matter how right they think they are.

So if the US supports those elements that most closely represent our own society, I wouldn't call that meddling.

And the difference this time, is that Iran isn't stuck in the middle of a cold war between the US and Soviets where geopolitical concerns overrode principles of supporting democracy. I may be wrong, but Iran has the potential of being the next secular muslim state, following the Turkish model.
