The numbers suggest otherwise. The average user buys a computer with Windows XP installed and simply uses it as an appliance, not a science project. Dell and other OEMs used to make Linux preloads available but stopped due to lack of demand.

No consumer demand for Linux isn't going to change anytime soon. The only "consumers" who are running it are hobbyists and even those hobbyists will most likely pay for a distribution rather than go the "free" route because they do place a value on their time.
