Firefighter says engine broke off crash plane

A volunteer firefighter at the scene of the Queens air crash says one of the jet's engines broke off and set fire to a three-storey house.

He says his fire crew arrived at the house to find the burning engine had landed in a boat in the driveway.

Some 200 firefighters in 44 fire trucks are at the scene of the crash.

The site where the engine landed is reportedly several blocks from where the plane came down.

He told CNN: "The plane engine fell from the sky on fire. It has ignited the three-storey house, its garage, a vehicle in the garage and a boat in the driveway.

"Luckily there was no-one in the house. There's still an awful lot of excess fuel burning but the fire is under control."

Some of the firefighters had reportedly been attending a nearby memorial service for the September 11 attacks.

New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has been speaking to reporters.

He said: "My first reaction was 'Oh my God.' We are just closing the tunnels and bridges for an hour or two to see if this is an isolated incident, which we hope it is."

He said many of the dead firemen and policemen in the September 11 terrorist attacks lived in the area hit by the crash.
