All the Drooling AMDroids were butt-slapping themselves with GLEE when AMD EXPANDED their DregsDEN fab early this year to include Oxygen implanters for their SOI program. The oxygen implant system will give you an SOI wafer. The system does, however, have numerous problems. The oxide layer is irregular, which can eat up some or all of your performance gains depending on transistor architecture. The greater (and more frequently encountered) problem is damage to the EPI silicon because of the high-energy implant. This damage causes yield fallout. The only way AMD is going to make SOI work is to move away from the oxygen implant method (if indeed they were every planning on using that method).
