<< I don't suppose that might be because you went straight to www.kernel.org, the nerdiest Linux site you could dream up >>

I went to the site I was first suggested to go to. I then searched a large number of other sites.

<< For that matter, could it be that you're not really using a 28.8 modem as you claim >>

I'm not using a 28.8 modem and I never claimed that I was. I claim (accurately I might add) that the best my phone system will connect me at is 28.8, it's usually 24.0 or 26.4. This is not due to my modem which is a 56k, but due to the old phone line system in our neighborhood.

So far, I can honestly say that Linux looks like it is almost impossible to obtain by free download and if I don't have a friend that will lone me the CD-ROM's then I'll have to buy it.

Buy Linux. I probably will do this, just to see how it works. I can't comment on what all this trouble is worth until I actually try it.
