Hi Rich,

WRT the portable computer battery apps for Valence's technology there's hope yet <G>. Dell recently awarded Samsung a p.o. for an ultra-portable computer similar to a model they produce for Gateway, their Solo 3450. If Dell's c400 is a Samsung, chances are the lithiun ion polymer battery plate is too.

Dell goes outside of Taiwan and hands notebook orders to Samsung

David Tzeng, Taipei; Willie Teng, DigiTimes.com [Monday 12 November 2001]

Dell Computer recently awarded notebook orders to Samsung Electronics, expanding its notebook supply source outside of Taiwan. Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics and Wistron, all Taiwanese companies, are currently making notebooks for Dell.

Samsung will manufacture a 12.1-inch TFT LCD model for Dell, with shipments scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2002. The size of the orders will depend on market conditions, but sources pointed out that monthly shipments should be over 10,000 units.

Gateway Computer ordered a similar model earlier this year from Samsung and is selling it as part of the Solo 3450 series. The model is enjoying strong sales in the US and Japan.

Since Dell is projected to ship five million notebooks next year, the company must add new manufacturing partners to ensure sufficient supply. However, with Taiwanese notebook makers already producing more than 70% of its notebooks, industry insiders are wondering why Dell decided to go outside of Taiwan.

Sources from foreign companies pointed out that Dell is not planning to build a long-term relationship with Samsung similar to those it has with Taiwanese companies. Due to Gateways success with the Samsung model, Dell is hoping to make a short-term killing. As the notebook reaches the end of its life cycle, Dells partnership with Samsung should gradually fade out as well, the sources expect.

To avoid over-reliance on Taiwanese manufacturers is another reason for the selection of Samsung. Compaq Computer recently handed orders for a 15.1-inch business notebook to South Koreas LG Electronics. Monthly shipments are projected to reach 35,000 units.

South Korea, with its well-developed LCD industry, can still attract major notebook vendors. Furthermore, although South Korean companies cannot compete with Taiwanese manufacturers in cost control, they are considered technologically superior in developing super-thin notebooks.

Dell, the worlds number one PC vendor, is expected to reduce in-house production (receiving motherboards from Foxconn Electronics and Jabil Circuit and performing assembly at its own facility). Increasing orders to Taiwan is still the companys main strategy. At the moment, Compal has begun complete unit production for Dell, while Quanta and Wistron are still making barebone systems. Quanta will receive complete unit orders by year-end.

Quanta, Compal and Wistron expect to produce 2.8-3 million units, 1.3 million-1.5 million units and 500,000-700,000 notebooks for Dell in 2002, respectively

Well the Quarterly report is out:

biz.yahoo.com

We all have heard the details before but it still looks anaemic when put in writing. Especially the part about the decrease in revenues from sale of laminate because of strategic shift to licensing when revenues from licensing are a paltry $2.2mil of which $1.6mil refers to Hanil. A poor showing as expected.
