Right - that was the explanation given for the TWA 800 explosion - and a lot of people were not satisfied by that explanation. At the time I thought those people were whackos. Now I am beginning to wonder.

Significantly, the central fuel tank on the TWA Flt. 800 747 was empty or near empty. Apparently, the tank filled with fumes and was ignited from a spark from wiring that was not properly insulated or had frayed.

In addition, if I recall correctly, the day of the crash was very hot, and the plane had been delayed a significant time on the runway.

I have to believe that a repeat of the type of explosion on TWA Flt. 800 would be highly unlikely.
