Tim,

Does Banias use the P3 core, the P4 core or a new core?

I think it has a modified P6 core (bases of processors branded Pii and Piii up to and including Tualatin). Timna was based on the same processor as well. The core of P4 branded processors (Willamette, Northwood) should be P7.

Oh well, the marketing guys (at both Intel and AMD) probably derive some pleasure from their power to confuse the geeks with unclear terminology.

Joe

It builds upon the P6 microarchitecture, but the physical core has been massively reworked.

IMHO, it is almost a certainty that Banias will feature an integrated memory controller, along with a whole host of power saving features (such as shutting of clusters of transistors when not in use).
