Wayne, I can understand their reluctance to cause panic, but it also may simply be too early to know for certain, one way or the other. An explosion definitely tilts things toward terrorism, though even that isn't conclusive. The Space Shuttle and The Hindenberg prove that airborne vehicles are capable of making their own explosions. But if I had to vote right now, I would put some more bloody marks in the terrorist column. And more demerits for US airport safety procedures and personnel.
