You make a good point about the anthrax. I agree with you that one of the reasons people were reluctant to think of that first infection of the photo editor of a supermarket tabloid as an attack is that it did not have any imaginable link to Al Qaeda - and it probably did not, in my opinion. I was in the camp that suspected a nutball American from the beginning.

Similarly, the plane could have suffered an act of sabotage without being connected at all to Al Qaeda, which is not out only enemy.

Or, as you point out, it could be a coincidental mechanical failure.
