Korean Semi Market Reeling

Country hit hard as DRAM, PC sector pricing tumbles

By Drew Wilson -- Electronic News, 11/12/2001

Reports from South Korea's semiconductor industry aren't good.

Falling chip prices and low demand have Hynix Semiconductor Inc. still struggling to survive and are even expected to impact the country's growth this year. South Korea's central bank revised its annual GDP growth forecast downward to 3.8 percent from 5.3 percent. That's quite a drop from last year's growth figure of 8.8 percent.

Profits have been hit hard as the average selling price (ASP) for DRAMs—about $1.87 in July—continues to erode. Bhavin Shah, an analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) in Hong Kong, expects Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.'s net profit to be down by 60 percent this year, while Hynix increases its loss by 70 percent. Together, the two companies, which hold the first and third position, respectively, in worldwide DRAM production, account for more than 90 percent of South Korea's chip exports.

"We don't expect the DRAM market to hit bottom before the second quarter next year," Shah added.
