I think that proves that MSFT doesn't have its head in the sand when it comes to competitive threat awareness. I wonder if anything like that memo would be found circulating around SUNW?

That just means that Linux is about to start losing market share, IMO.

MSFT picks on 'the' threat and it wins, one threat at a time. A decade ago it was Mac, they won that battle. Two years ago they decided that SUNW was 'the' threat and I believe that battle has also been won. Recently they set their sights on AOL and PALM, both have lost considerable ground to MSFT this past year.

Look out Linux, if MSFT considers it to be 'the' competition, prepare for it to be quite wounded when the dust settles.
