Hi Carl,

Re: Even in the dreams of the Communists, the facts were that the urban proletariat listened to them a lot more than the rural did.

The Russian serfs were so out of touch with the realities of politics that they were easily discounted. The best way to subjugate a people is to fail to educate them. This is exactly the evil of the madrassa system. And the misogyny of the fundamentalist musulmen.

Frankly, I view the Communists of old (eg.Lenin/Stalin/Beria) as thugs who manipulated the aspirations of humble people for their own interests.

Would-be leaders like Bakunin and Trotsky lost out because they actually had some democratic leanings, a true sign of weakness. Authoritarians generally get the cheese, in the current parlance.
