As counter-intuitive as it may be, 802.11a is the newer of the two. There are two primary differences between the two (other than the physics of it), 802.11a has a nominal frequency of 5GHz vs. 2.4GHz, and 802.11a has a maximum data rate of 57mbits vs. 11 (although Proxim has a x2 variant of 802.11a that can go in excess of 100mbits). Of course, at a full 57mbits, the distance is only like 10 meters or so...

Forget Bluetooth for those applications. Sadly, Bluetooth with all of if's profiles is too complicated. ZigBee is simpler, cheaper and less problematic.
