Hi Linda Pearson; My intuition says the plane was bombed. There's some evidence that it was an engine failure, and engine failures do tend to happen during take-off, but my intuition still says bomb. I've been wrong before, of course.

I think this is just a horrific accident... on September 11th, we as a people have been inoculated and desensitized for future mass tragedies, this makes it unsettling that we can now breathe a sigh of relief that today's monstrous tragedy may 'only' be an accident... our national psyche has clearly changed in the past two months.....

Linda - Great to see you here!!! "Not kosher" is an understatement. I hate this new habit of calling NY to see if my daughter is alive.

Pilot friend of mine says there is practically NO security for checked baggage, and airline crews have been raising hell about this since the late '80's. Ben Gurion Airport at Tel Aviv opens and goes through EVERY piece of luggage pre flight, checked or not. Notice how many hijacking or bombs EL AL has had? NONE

What I find strange is the number of planes that have had some sort of catastrophic failure originating from JFK since July, 1996. I can think of four planes going down, one of them deemed to be a pilot committing suicide, but it's still a high rate considering that it seems to be happening from planes originating from JFK. I don't recall four commercial planes going down shortly after takeoff from other major metropolitan airports in the same period of time (but I'm sure someone will correct me if my memory is faulty).

It's just very strange.
