Vishay Intertechnology Inc., through numerous acquisitions, has become a passive and active component powerhouse over the years, and it's maintaining that strategy through the current downturn.

The Malvern, Pa.-based company last week acquired privately held Mallory North American Capacitor Co. of Indianapolis, bolstering the Vishay tantalum capacitor offerings. Vishay has acquired numerous capacitor companies over the years, including Sprague, Vitramon, Tansitor, Roederstein and Draloric.

Mallory is a leading manufacturer of wet tantalum electrolytic capacitors. It also makes aluminum and audible signal products and has manufacturing facilities in Greencastle, Ind., and Glasgow, Ky. Mallory also markets and distributes aluminum, tantalum, film and ceramic capacitors and had around $44 million in sales for the fiscal year ended Oct. 31. Formerly the capacitor division of P.R. Mallory Inc., the company was purchased in 1990 by a management-led group of investors.
