No, when you develop for Windows, you have to support whatever hardware configurations your customers require, or you will lose those customers. For my own products, I typically require "any system that will run QuickTime," which means Win95 or NT4 or later, or Mac OS. Only Microsoft has the luxury of dropping support for its own recent, slightly obsolete, platforms, because losing some potential app customers is worth gaining some OS customers. Of course, any effective remedy to the antitrust case will remedy that.

Hmmm, Not from my experience.

Great posts by the way, very educational. I am convinced that Linux has a good future in the server market. Windows and Linux are certainly taking market share away from UNIX.

I'm not convinced that Linux has any potential in the PC OS market though.
