Mullah Omar flees to Pakistan: report

MOSCOW: Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar has fled Afghanistan for Pakistan, a foreign news agency quoted a senior Northern Alliance official as claiming Tuesday in neighboring Tajikistan.

Mukhitdin Mekhti, a senior representative of the Northern Alliance's government in exile in Dushanbe, added that Northern Alliance forces took control Tuesday of the main Taliban stronghold of Kandahar, the Russian state news agency reported.

The city was now under the control of forces loyal to former Afghan king Mohammed Zahir Shah, the official added.

TEHRAN: Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 terror attacks on the United States are "safe and sound," a Taliban official told the state IRNA news agency Tuesday.
