Taliban officials abandon only embassy

Taliban officials have abandoned the regime's only embassy in Pakistan.

At least three vehicles have left the Islamabad premises for an unknown destination. One was carrying four officials.

They left behind about 80 journalists trying to get visas from the embassy to enter Afghanistan.

Journalists who tried to question the officials were rebuffed, reports the Indo Asian News Service.

"There is no question of being issued visas," one Taliban diplomat said.

The departure comes hours after a Taliban representative said the ruling militia had withdrawn from their positions inside Afghanistan, including Kabul, following the Northern Alliance offensive.

He claimed they were scattering themselves in small groups in southern provinces to get ready for guerilla war.

Confirming the closure of the Taliban embassy in Islamabad, Pakistani government sources said consulates in Peshawar and Quetta were also being closed.

Pakistan authorities shut the Taliban consulate in Karachi last week.
