PC Magazine : The Eighteenth Annual Awards for Technical Excellence

drum rolls .......

Winner: Intel Itanium/IA-64 Architecture

pcmag.com

From the article : "
Originally, Merced was scheduled to introduce IA-64 to the world in the middle of 1999, but—as is often the case with high-end microprocessors—its debut was long delayed. "Building a mainframe-class processor is like a mini moon launch," explains Krewell. "It's such a large and complex project, you're susceptible to delays."

So, we had two years delay on Itanium. Anyone know the delay for USIII and Hammer (so far) ? It should be very close to delay of itanium, if not more.

Maui.

Joe, Re: HardOCP site specifically said these were not working samples.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I must have missed Kyle's comments. So it looks like the production samples aren't ready yet. If they have them ray in the next few days, it still should be soon enough for small introduction volumes in Q1.

I guess since the picture is of a standard Socket A chip, the chips in smaller form factors will follow later (and miss some opportunities AMD will have in mobile space?)

I don't know how difficult it is to move from one package to another but since AMD specifically wants to target Thoroughbred for mobile use first (as said on the CC), it would make sense to introduce the smaller packages at the same time. In order for AMD to compete in the lightweight and ultra-light market they have to migrate to smaller packages anyway.
