No, because the parties did not want to. They were dominated by their feelings of fear, revulsion, threat, wish to punish, wish to threaten, wish to forestall.....whatever.

BUT: YES, any war can be avoided if the parties genuinely seek peace, not war, and are prepared to:

-- understand each other
-- take each other into account
-- cooperate
-- tolerate

It absolutely works if the parties wish it to and absolutely doesn't if they don't.
