"Do you think prayer to God himself, for all believers in all the faiths you mentioned, is out of the question?"

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

"Why choose anything other than God himself to pray to?"
Traditionally, because it has been felt that the great
Realizers and Revealers of the Divine are a massive aid to the process. But all True Prayer is to God.

In my religious community of some 2,000 people this is the Prayer we are currently using, daily:

<< Beloved, (Great Spirit, Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Allah, Higher Love, Da, Higher Power- You fill in the blanks), of our hearts,

We call upon You for the sake of all beings on earth, surrendering body and mind and breath to You.

Beloved, we pray that the people of all countries let their love of friends, family, and country become the healing spirit of worldwide cooperation and tolerance. Let each one take personal and collective action that contributes to global peace.

We also affirm that the leaders of all nations take prudent and heart-felt action, using cooperative action and diplomacy to establish the foundations of real peace. Let the leaders of the world's nations practice tolerance of all races and religious beliefs, ensuring the greatest freedom and safety for all.

May all earthkind be moved beyond our merely mortal suffering here to a much greater destiny, Blessed by You, Dissolved in Your all-outshining Light.>>>

Namaste!

Jim
