OK, that's sort of what I figured too. But then that raises the question of what the appreciation potential of gorillas on main street is likely to be. It's a bit of a bait-and-switch, in other words, to talk about gorilla gaming in general while refering to historical returns that were racked up during tornado years, and then offer mature silverbacks on main street as the current buy recommendation. I'm not saying they won't do well or aren't good choices (WTFDIK?), but it would be great to find some tornados in progress as well, if only for excitement...

I can think of a few comebacks that belong on the Mudge thread, but instead I would like to emphasize that I think that we are making a real big mistake if we think that the question "is company X a gorilla" or "is company X on main street" are only true and false questions. Obviously The Soft One is on Main Street with respect to part of their product line, but just as obviously this doesn't cover all product lines, nor is Main Street without its exciting moments and challenges.

There is no way that we are going to suddenly find five years from now that MSFT is suddenly in a minority on the desktop ... but that doesn't mean that even that market is a complete slam dunk. They have tremendous gorilla power, but to keep that power and keep generating revenue from it, they have to keep people moving forward along the path. Will the world simply draw the line at XP? Will Linux (or Lindows?) gradually build up an image as an alternative and suddenly turn into a real threat, just as it has moved from cult to serious status in just a few years?

Main Street is not the heady time of a tornado, but any company that wants to remain a gorilla beyond the lifespan of the product that got it that status in the first place needs to both create new tornados and to engineer Main Street so that it remains on top.
