Manufacturing jobs at risk

CBI's Digby Jones sees no upturn until autumn 2002

UK manufacturing confidence has fallen sharply this autumn, putting up to 30,000 more jobs at risk, the Confederation of British Industry has warned.
The CBI's first survey since 11 September confirms that manufacturing sentiment, already fragile due to the economic slowdown, has declined throughout the UK since the terrorist attacks.

The sharpest falls in confidence were recorded in the North West, Wales, the West Midlands, and the South West.

The survey also highlights a steep decline in optimism over export prospects, particularly in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, Wales, and the South West.
