Sure. I fully understand the predicament of the US government --- damned if they do and damned if they don't. So clearly, they will wish to 'sweep the incident under the carpet'. That is, if they are able to.

The problem is next time --- and the next etc. Unfortunately, what is really at stake is the credibility and honesty of the administration and not their ability to kid prospective travelers that air travel is still safe. I need not remind you of your last President and what he did to the honor and integrity of his position.

The situation is even more complex because the administration cannot admit to having screwed up US security --- yet again! While they were hunting for knitting needles, nail files, plastic knives etc, someone went and blew up or shot down a US plane --- under their very noses.

As you say, they are panicking. Or, they should be!
