of course, they will have to explain how a horizontal vortex would sheer a vertical stabelizer....and both engines. The tailfin (vertical stabelizer) would pretty much slice through a horizontal vortex. The surface that would take the bulk of the force from the horizontal vortex would be the rear wing structures and elevators (the horizontal structures)

IMO, the turbulence that was reported may not have been turbulence at all. It may have been the rattling that would inevitably occured when the vertical stabelizer started to detach. I think that the first thing that a pilot would think when the airframe shudders is that it is wake turbulence, the last thing that would occur to him/her is that the plane is coming apart.
