The national ID cards that are being proposed are futuristic things that use some form of biometric verification, like your fingerprint or an iris scan.

But even without such sci-fi ability, whoever stole your card would be trackable, just as whoever steals your credit card is trackable. Once you report it stolen, it's cancelled, and whoever tries to use it generates an alarm.

In theory, anyway. I don't know if the technology is ready for prime time.

I just don't have a problem with the concept. I have a hard time comprehending how it could be abused by the government. We already have national ID cards - our social security cards - and 1984 came and went without Big Brother taking over.
