[JDSU's] lock on the brain trust

Optical is demand driven and when demand fell off the cliff, the pressure eased up on the talent pool. Lots of engineers looking for work, I assume.

I don't have any hard facts to back me up, but I think most of JDSU's layoffs have been on the manufacturing side and to get rid of redundancies created by their acquisitions.

One thing that does strike me is that they had been hiring from the semi-conductor industry as recently as six months ago. This leads me to believe that JDSU is heavily focused on bringing mass production techniques to its cumbersome manufacturing methods. More important, perhaps, will be the interface that these semi-conductor types have with the optical engineers in designing chips that effectively eliminate the need for a lot of equipment by embedding "traffic cop" functions.

If and when demand picks up, JDSU still has a lot of money in the bank and a lot of talent.
