There is no "maybe" about it. Celeron will hit 1.5GHz in the third quarter next year, before a 1.8GHz Netburst based Celeron follows it. The Tualatin could probably go even faster than 1.5GHz, but we know that for whatever logistical or marketing reasons, Intel is transitioning everything on the desktop to Netburst. Had Tualatin gone farther forward, I think it could have matched any speed that the Athlon is able to achieve with their smaller gate lengths.

Also, I've begun to believe that the real way to transistor performance comes from the gate length, not the actual size of the node dimensions. Intel's real .13u process is beginning to show gate lengths equivalent to AMD's qunti-.13u process, which is why the performance of the Tualatin is approaching the Athlon. The shrink applied to the rest of the node will tend to decrease die size and power consumption, but not do much more for performance.

Of course, this is just my casual observation from the facts that I've seen so far. I don't pretend that what I said was any sort of expert opinion.

I think that's proof that the processor design matters more than copper. 0.13u copper Tualatin can't surpass Palomino, yet 0.18u aluminum P4 can.
